FAQs

What is ketamine-assisted psychotherapy?

Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) is a form of therapy that combines the use of ketamine with traditional psychotherapeutic techniques to treat various mental health conditions. The use of ketamine in this context is based on its ability to induce a rapid antidepressant effect, which when combined with ongoing therapy and its neuroplastic benefits can support meaningful and lasting change.

How is KAP different from traditional therapy?

KAP differs from traditional therapy in several key ways:

  1. Rapid onset of action: Ketamine can produce rapid antidepressant effects, often within hours or days, compared to traditional antidepressants which can take weeks or months to show significant improvement.
  2. Mechanism of action: Ketamine works differently than traditional antidepressants, targeting the glutamate system and promoting neural plasticity, which can lead to more rapid and sustained improvements in mood.
  3. Therapeutic approach: KAP often involves a more intensive and focused therapeutic approach, with sessions spaced closely together to maximize the therapeutic window provided by the ketamine.
Is ketamine safe for me?

Ketamine is generally considered safe when used in a controlled medical setting and under the guidance of a trained healthcare professional. However, it is important to note that ketamine can have side effects, including:

  • Dissociation (feeling disconnected from oneself or the environment)
  • Hallucinations
  • Increased heart rate and blood pressure
  • Nausea and vomiting

It is crucial to discuss your medical history and any concerns with your healthcare provider before undergoing KAP. They will assess your suitability for the treatment and monitor you closely during and after the sessions.

What can I expect during and after a session?

During a session, you’ll be supported in a safe and calming environment, with a therapist present to guide and hold space for your experience. You may explore insights, emotions, or imagery that arise during the ketamine journey.

After a session, you’ll have time to reflect and integrate your experience with your therapist’s support. Many clients report a sense of clarity, emotional release, or renewed perspective in the days that follow.

Who should consider KAP?

KAP may be beneficial for individuals who:

  • Have treatment-resistant symptoms
  • Have not responded to traditional therapies or medications
  • Are seeking a more rapid onset of therapeutic effects
  • Are seeking Self-Exploration and Personal Growth

KAP is legal in the United States and other countries when used under the guidance of a licensed healthcare professional.

How does KAP work?

KAP’s therapeutic effects are thought to be related to its ability to:

  1. Block NMDA receptors: Ketamine blocks NMDA receptors in the brain, which can lead to increased glutamate release and subsequent activation of AMPA receptors. This process enhances neural plasticity and promotes the formation of new neural connections.
  2. Increase BDNF: Ketamine increases the production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein involved in the growth and maintenance of neurons.
  3. Promote synaptic plasticity: The increased glutamate release and BDNF production facilitate synaptic plasticity, allowing for more efficient communication between neurons.

From a psychological perspective, KAP can:

  1. Enhance emotional processing: The altered state of consciousness induced by ketamine can facilitate deeper emotional insight and processing.
  2. Increase self-awareness: The therapeutic session can help individuals integrate their experiences and gain a deeper understanding of themselves.
  3. Foster a sense of hope and motivation: The rapid improvement in mood can increase motivation and hope, leading to more engagement in the therapeutic process.
